You just never know who you might be impacting

You really just never know who you might be impacting. One of my goals is to meditate daily. Since the New Year I’ve been doing the Daily Calm meditation. (https://www.calm.com/) We have a room where I have some of my meditation things including what my

Oh life and its setbacks!

Last evening I sprained my right ankle pretty badly. I’m not even sure what or how it happened. I was taking the dogs out for their walk, carrying a piece of recycling to put out in the bin in the grass at the end of

Slower can = faster and better

Slower can = faster and better

Years ago I remember hearing something along those lines when I was learning to use a soft-tissue laser in dentistry. The laser didn’t work like the hand-piece where you could work fast and cut fast. The slower you went the faster (and better) the laser cut.

Somewhat counterintuitive, no?

I think of that concept from time to time as there could be many situations where this idea applies. For me these days it’s with my running.

I sure do miss it.

And, you may be thinking isn’t this blog called “Live Play Run” where is the Run?

Well my friends, I sometimes think that too.

But I know I will be back running again. And when I am, I will be stronger and leaner which will make running more enjoyable.

In my journey, I’ve had to take a step back from running, but I have been walking every single day. I’ve actually walked over 115 miles since December 6th!

I’m coming back to myself again. I will be able to get back to running. No, I will be running again soon!

Sometimes, you have to go slow to go fast.

Prior to December 6th I was trying to run some here and there, without much consistency, but with a lot of frustration. It (running) felt hard and slow. But I love it so I kept trying.

But like they say doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.

Now working with a coach has helped give me consistency and direction. We both felt it was a good idea to stop the running for now and walk (in addition to strength training workouts). But she knows it is a goal of mine to get back to running.

I’ve eyed some races here in NC. There are more goals on the horizon.

Soon enough I’ll be going fast. Maybe even faster and better than before!

“It’s all going to work out!”

“It’s all going to work out!”

Today, January 12, there’s more talk about impending POSSIBLE snow here in NC this coming weekend. Even 2 days ago there was a post from The Weather Channel about it and everybody started to go crazy! One guy who keeps it real on his weather

Happy New Year! As everyone is making those resolutions and seeing all the marketing out there to lose weight, get in shape, and be the “new you” I’d like to share something I was thinking of today. As I’ve shared I have really packed on

Year review and plan 2022! No resolutions here!

Year review and plan 2022! No resolutions here!

Are you spending more time planning your next trip, your next vacation, your weekend plans, what’s for dinner than your year ahead?

Keep on reading! This will be worthwhile for your life!

I just spent this afternoon doing a 2021 year review and 2022 goals.

I actually have been looking forward to it all week!

I first started this in 2019. I got some ideas from one of Michael Hyatt’s books, Your Best Year Ever, and Rachel Hollis’s podcast.

First, I do a year review, in this case of 2021. I sit down with my planner and start back in January flipping through it and have 3 columns on paper: what happened that was awesome, what I never want to do again, and what made me feel like I was living my best life.

So some things that were awesome for me in 2021:

  • I started working with a career coach
  • Took painting classes
  • Left a toxic job and took time off
  • Went to Florida to see family
  • got my Fellowship from the AGD (Academy of General Dentistry)
  • Started working on my health by investing in a nutritionist/accountability coach

Some things that I never want to do again:

  • work FT in dentistry
  • move across country
  • be underpaid for my worth and value as I was in a position I had
  • get a dental license in another state
  • continue to eat poorly, gain weight, and have high cholesterol

And finally, things that made me feel like I was living the good life:

  • getting regular massages
  • Being fitted for my own golf clubs
  • having time off and time abundance
  • sitting out in our backyard in NC
  • celebrating
  • travel (going to FL, back to OH to see fam, Austin for AGD conference)

I hope you can see already how insightful and amazing this is to do! And these are just a handful of items from each of my 3 columns.

Then I made goals for the year in 9 various categories – spiritual, intellectual, emotional, physical, marital, social, vocational, avocational, and financial. I usually try to list 3-5 goals in each.

These are to be S.M.A.R.T. goals – specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. I’ll admit mine are not always that but it’s good to have something to keep working on 😉

I’ll share a few below to give you some ideas.

  • Spiritual
    • Meditate daily
    • Practice gratitude
    • Keep working on developing my intuition and listening to it
  • Intellectual
    • Read 2 books/month
    • Write 1 blog post/week
  • Emotional
    • Continue to see my therapist
    • Take time to slow down and rest
  • Physical
    • Daily walks
    • Strength workouts 3x/week
    • Get back into running (possible 10 miler 10/22/2022)
  • Marital
    • 2 vacations/year together
    • Fun date nights (other than just going out to eat 🙂
  • Social
    • Make friends here
    • Running store group runs
  • Vocational
    • Keep working on what’s my next
    • Coaching training or ?
  • Avocational
    • Golf at least 2x/month
    • Explore – new cities, hikes, things to do
  • Financial
    • Get back on track saving
    • Pay extra to mortgage
    • Keep having our budget meetings

Again, it took just a couple hours to do this. Some people may block out a half or even whole day. I love reviewing the year and realizing how much happened and how much I’ve done. It’s great to think on what you don’t want to do anymore, have on your calendar, or what is not beneficial to live the life you desire.

Be deliberate about your time! I strongly encourage you to take the time to plan your year ahead. And, look at the year behind to help know what you want in year ahead.

Cheers! Happy New Year! Let’s do 2022!

This morning as I enjoyed a cup of coffee while reading on the couch, I felt a gnawing at me. This gnawing was asking why aren’t you getting the laundry started or why aren’t you working on your to-do list. Ha! Got that gnawing on

Amazing how much positive difference just a week can make!

Amazing how much positive difference just a week can make!

Last blog I talked about investing in yourself and how I invested in a nutritionist/accountability coach. I am now just over a week in this health journey and it’s amazing how such a short time has made such a positive difference. Yes I’ve lost over

Investing in yourself is the best investment you can make!

Investing in yourself is the best investment you can make!

Hey everyone! So I took the plunge and made a big investment in myself last week! I’ve hired a nutritionist/accountability coach.

I’m so excited!

I had been stalking a facebook group by this coach and soaking in as much info as I could. I’ve spent money on other avenues including a nutritionist to try to help with my health goals but haven’t succeeded. So I was hesitant to spend more money.

However, the more I scoured her page and started interacting with her it just seemed serendipitous. I was nervous – especially with how much money it was. But I always have said health is wealth and investing in yourself is the best investment you can make!

I signed up last Thursday, had my first call Friday and officially started yesterday! It feels so good. And, I do realize I’m very fortunate to be able to afford to do this. I don’t plan to waste it!

I’ve been going through a bit of a journey here –

  • I started working with a career coach in January 2021.
  • I found a therapist who’s a good fit in the spring 2021.

I am feeling like this is the last missing piece to the puzzle of me. Because if I don’t like how I feel or look and am unhappy in my own body nothing else really matters, does it?

What I am really loving about this new coach is it’s not just about nutrition and exercise. She strongly believes in mindset as well and that mindset is a big part of health! I can’t agree more!

I mean I think of the many things I have accomplished thus far and still have trouble believing in myself. That is finally starting to change.

In our society however, especially for women, it’s almost an honor to berate ourselves. Think of the last time you went shopping with other female(s). No one, at least that I know of, comes out of a dressing room with an outfit on saying “I look amazing” or “I look hot!”

No, it’s more like “This outfit makes me look fat” or “I’m so out of shape.” What the heck is this?

My therapist has told me of a time when she was in a group going around saying what they thought of themselves and she said “I’m a badass.” Everyone chuckled like she was joking. She said no really “I’m a badass.”

Yes! See why she’s my therapist?! We all need to – and should!- think more highly of ourselves.

This is finally starting to change for me and it feels good! And, this is just the beginning!

I choose to invest in myself!

And you know why?

Because I’m worth it!

And so are you!

Some reasons why I dislike being a dentist

Some reasons why I dislike being a dentist

After the first few weeks of my new dentisting job I actually was starting to wonder if I could continue in this career for years and years. It didn’t seem so bad, wasn’t too stressful and was almost enjoyable. Yesterday however, it was like the
