Working on seeing the good

Last week we had our final walk-through for our new home in NC. Can you believe it was the first time I was seeing the house in-person?! We never thought we’d buy a home without seeing it in person but with the craziness of the market we ended up doing just that! Our fantastic agent here did a virtual tour of it with us which certainly was better than nothing!
So when I saw this home for the first-time and it being our final walk-through, it was all overwhelming as along with me seeing it for the first time, we needed to make sure things were done that the seller was supposed to do. Unfortunately, the flaws I saw overshadowed what a great home this is. I saw the dings and areas that were spackled but not painted on the walls, dirt that speckled the floor, and knicks in the wood.

I left that first visit with a sinking feeling and the excitement I had felt about our house nearly disappeared. Fortunately, the second time we went to it (to clean! 😃) I was able to take the house in on my own time and felt much better about it! I saw the positive aspects of the house, like the large fenced-in yard for our dogs to run around and the Carolina room for us to enjoy all year.
I don’t know why I am always so quick to see the flaws and be critical of what isn’t right. Some of it I think stems from being a dentist as we do need to have a critical eye in the work we do day in and day out. I also am a recovering perfectionist, a constant work in progress for me.
However, that criticalness sneaks into all areas of life. Sadly, oftentimes it can ruin a great moment – just like seeing our North Carolina home for the first time! So instead of finding the flaws I’m working on seeing the good. Sometimes it’s easier than others to see the good that but focusing on the positive is more fun and feels better to me, don’t you agree?
