Power for Purple 5k: Focus on the win

Power for Purple 5k: Focus on the win

Last Saturday I ran the Power for Purple 5k. I wanted to test my current fitness as I have been running consistently since the last 5k I ran end of April which I wrote about here.

At that time in April I hadn’t been running as much as I had wanted to be due to being sick in March but I still went out and gave it my all and discovered I did better than I thought I would with a time of 27:36.

So I’ll get right to it. This past Saturday I ran 5k in 25:35. So a two minute improvement! Woohoo!

The nitty gritty. The race was to be a 5k but by my watch it ended up being 3.4 miles, which I did in 28:16 but I went back to see what the time was at the 5k mark. That is the true and proper comparison!

This Power for Purple 5k was about 20 minutes away in Seven Lakes. It was a fairly warm, sunny morning especially with a start at 8:30am. I arrived about 50 minutes beforehand and there weren’t many people there. I used the restroom and more folks arrived as well as knowing where to go to get a bib and my shirt.

This was either the first or maybe second time for this event so it was definitely new. And small. We had bibs but not chip timed and no timing was even done to my knowledge. The course was a really nice loop, albeit long (3.4 miles is not a 5k!), and a good amount was shaded so for that I give it an “A.”

Being a small field I was worried I’d be running alone. To me part of the point of the race is to have others there to help push you! Fortunately there were a couple other females who I had to follow and help me push my own pace. Thus I was third. But seriously, there were probably not even 30 people who did it.

However small it was, the race served it’s purpose and did confirm my fitness is improving! And it’s always fun to go out and give a hard effort!

So I’m focusing on the win here!

And I can’t deny I’m excited about continuing to run and improve. I’m thinking of finding a 10k, maybe in August and eyeing a 10 miler in the fall and a trail half-marathon in January 2023!
