Standing firm in what I want = self-care

Standing firm in what I want = self-care

As some of you may (or may not) know, I have been on a bit of a hiatus from practicing dentistry. And, I like it. However, to leave for good right now wasn’t the plan. I can’t lie – I’ve been secretly wishing that I

It’s OK To Call It Good Enough

It’s OK To Call It Good Enough

Sometimes it’s ok to call it good enough.

I was out this morning trimming bushes and pulling weeds, in the North Carolina heat and humidity no less!

It was a good feeling to see progress trimming away, cleaning up the pieces, and putting them in the trash can. The sweat was pouring!

Branches on the bushes taunted me sticking out here and there and the fallen leaves and small pieces in the mulch and pine straw almost seemed to say here I am, come get me!

I kept cutting away and bending over, sweat dripping, picking up the cut pieces, moving along bush to bush.

At one point it came to me. It was that it’s ok to call it good enough and move on…and be done!

There’s the sayings “perfect is the enemy of good” and “perfect is the enemy of done.”

These were ringing true and louder than ever! Aside from that the thought that I’ll probably have to be out there doing it again late fall was telling me to call it good enough.

So I checked that off my list…for now!

It’s definitely sometimes ok to call it good enough.

SUPing is hard and peaceful! Can’t wait for more!

SUPing is hard and peaceful! Can’t wait for more!

So I did get out on the water with my new SUP yesterday! I’m sure you were waiting with bated breath to hear how it went. 😃 I’m so glad I just went for it and did it. I transported my board safely and easily

Get out and SUP. Let’s DO the Dang Thing!

Get out and SUP. Let’s DO the Dang Thing!

So I did a thing ….I bought a stand-up paddleboard or SUP! There are 8 lakes in our Village that residents can use. One of the largest lakes is just over a mile from our house! So it made sense to buy a SUP to

Life is Like a Round of Golf

Life is Like a Round of Golf

Last week we went out for our first round of golf here in North Carolina. We live near Pinehurst which is the home of the historic golf resort, Pinehurst Resort. There are golf courses everywhere including one just 5 minutes from our home in our Village. I am so grateful my husband introduced me to golf just over a year ago.

With the move and our belongings being in storage it had been some time since we last golfed. Our intent was to make it out to the golf range before playing a round but for various reasons that didn’t happen.

I was quite rusty to say the least! It was like I had forgotten how to play! Normally we walk with our push carts but with the heat and humidity (and a cart being included in our early bird fee) we rode. Driving the golf cart was fun and a welcome distraction from my poor playing.

Driving the golf cart was fun!

So the front nine holes were a warm-up for me, knocking off the rust, and a reminder of how to play. The back nine holes I got most of my game back and played much better. Thank goodness!

As we were playing we said how much life is like a round of golf.

In golf, sometimes you hit a great shot, but sometimes it goes way out of bounds. At times life can be going really well, or sometimes it can fall apart.

As you play a round of golf you need to make adjustments to your grip, swing, or stance. In life you need to make adjustments, perhaps to your career, family life, or finances.

Similarly to my recent round where the front nine was more of a preparation for the back nine, the first half of life maybe we are just warming up or preparing for the second half. Then in the second half, like the back nine where I got my groove back, we find our stride and, maybe, find ourselves.

All throughout life (and in a round of golf!) we need to keep making those adjustments because just as the golf ball goes up and comes back down, so do life’s ups and downs. I’m looking forward to continuing to make those adjustments in my golf game -and in life!

Don’t Just Do Something, Sit There!

Don’t Just Do Something, Sit There!

Don’t just sit there, do something! We hear this phrase often, right? But it could be doing us more harm than good. I read a different version of this that could serve us better, at least at times. Don’t just do something, sit there. Can

So happy to see the police!

So happy to see the police!

Say what?! Who says they are so happy to see the police? Well I did. Last week in our new home, I had taken the dogs out back before McNeill Propane was to come. Maizey decided to go #2 so I went to get a

Are your responsible for everything that happens in your life?

Are your responsible for everything that happens in your life?

“I am responsible for everything that happens in my life.”

I listened to a webinar yesterday having to do with achieving your best health and one point was that you are responsible for your life and you have the power over your life to change it.

Then another webinar today (on starting your side gig) ended with the same idea that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life.

Wow. Same message. Back to back days. I think the universe maybe trying to tell me something? I think, or I thought, I am someone who lives by accountability and responsibility, but perhaps not in all areas of my life? I want to improve my health, get back into shape, and lose weight. However, I have to admit, I have been eating my beloved ice cream nearly every evening for some time now.

Not exactly the right behavior to achieve optimum health and lose weight, is it?

I think in our society we are quick to blame others or our circumstances rather than look at ourselves. It’s easy to do for sure. Or similarly, we seek out help from others and fall into the idea that someone else needs to fix or help us. We often do hold the power within ourselves.

Our own bodies and minds are powerful, instinctual. If we just listened to that more. But first, we must look at ourselves rather than placing blame outside ourselves. We need to hold ourselves accountable and take responsibility for ourselves. Once we start to do that I think it’s amazing what could change.

So I suppose I need to put down that spoon – at least some nights! I am responsible for everything that happens in my life 😃

Dentist should not be top of best jobs list

Being a dentist is a great profession. It often ranks near the top of lists for best jobs. However, I disagree. After working as a dentist over 15 years, I do not think being a dentist is one of the best jobs. It is extremely
